Who’s read The Sandman by Neil Gaiman? There is another, older comic of the same name, which appears as a subplot in the modern title. Other than the name and it’s connection to dream, they share little in terms of style.
It’s probably the most literary comic I’ve ever read. Really well thought out, rich universe with a complex web of deities and “endless”, personified human states like Dream and Desire. The characters are dripping with vivacity.
I love this series, one of my all time faves. I especially love it, for the prose, the art at times, can be hard to discern, but you can tell the prose is top notch, and if it was written as a book, it’d be equally amazing.
As a whole Gaiman, remains one of my favourite writers, along with Alan Moore. I also loved the Dave Mckean covers for the series. If you haven’t read, you should try out Neil Gaiman and Dave Mckean’s Signal to Noise. It’s a one-shot, but it’s again one of my faves.
If you’ve read them before, or are looking to pick up a physical copy, may I recommend the newly redone volumes over the ’93-94 printing for the following obvious shading upgrades:
The new volumes have lots of good introductory notes and ancillary material that the first printing and singles didn’t include. One volume has Gaiman’s script for the issue, with penned in notes from artist and writer, which is neat to see. Anyone else a fan?
